I love this idea. My sohcol is adjacent to a greenway, and we could incorporate our life science concepts in QR codes posted along the greenway. Thanks.

I agree with you so much. I wish that more people could appreciate art the way that so many other people do. I have loved art since I was a small child and continue to do so to this day. I remember drawing pictures on pink paper that we had at home and plastering them all over the refrigerator or sending them to my grandparents for holidays and birthdays. My mother encouraged me to draw and to express myself through arts and crafts. I still love drawing, painting, scrapping, beading, you name it, I do it or have tried it or I want to learn it. I am constantly learning something new and I always wonder what will come next? What else can someone think of that hasn't already been done? Surprise, there will be something else for me to learn tomorrow I am sure that I would have never thought of myself or that could be done. That is why I love art.

As an administrator at a nonprofit performing arts organization, I really like the tree analogy. My particular role in finance is to help make sure the resources (water, minerals, etc) flow in a sustainable manner to the producers.

Most of my fellow administrators and I really do feel like we're here to support the artists. Sadly, many of the artists don't think that's our motivation. From the perspective of some, any additional strength in the trunk (the administration) means stolen resources from the leaves and flowers and buds (them). That's where tensions arise again and again.

It's a good question kyle. I will say first that working to improve and oversee all of the support areas of a college IS in my opinion part of supporting the student. Though as a faculty member I often do not see these things in action. As far as a faculty-administration-student relationship. I honestly don't see it and would have to disagree. The goal of the college is educating students, or it should be. Administrators are just not in that moment to moment situation where the learning happens. That isn't a judgement. I have known some superb administrators that I would consider to be highly student focused who had minimal student contact. Or they taught a course or two. Both are vital. If all are student-focused I think a college works well. It is when different forces in the college work to different super-objectives or what is sometimes worse, work with NO super-objective that the entire system begins to suffer and break down and those most effected are the students and faculty.

If the super-objective of an institution is to educate the student, why do you assume that only faculty can educate a student? Why do you feel the administration should move to support only faculty and have the faculty mediate all interaction with the students? It seems to me that instead the administration should move to support students. Many, many times that means supporting faculty. But it also means supporting other parts of the organization that provide support and learning opportunities to students as well. Under that model, instead of the administrator standing behind you and tapping you on the shoulder to share something you can share with the student, the three of you stand together in a partnership where everyone is working together for the student.

Unfortunately pages don't allow students to post to the page, just the course creator so that would put us back in the LMS box.
